What is grena.nu?

grena.nu is the national platform for open educational resources in Swedish higher education. In addition to search capabilities, grena.nu offers a gathering place and knowledge sources for open educational resources, open educational practices, and open education.

grena.nu is aimed at university teachers, educational developers, and librarians as a support and knowledge base within the field. The site was launched in April 2026 and is under continuous development.

Why are we called grena.nu?

The name grena comes from the verb att grena – to branch out, to divide, and to grow in multiple directions. This is exactly what open education is about. When knowledge is made free to use, adapt, and share, it is given the opportunity to spread further like branches on a tree. grena.nu aims to convey that it is finally time to move from words to action in a Swedish context, following numerous reports, investigations, and the publication of national guidelines and SUHF’s guidance for open science.

Just as a branch grows from a trunk, open education is built on the idea that resources, ideas, and people can branch out, develop, and connect. We gather initiatives, resources, and expertise that strengthen open and collaborative learning – where knowledge does not remain with one person but is shared among many. We are branching out, and we are starting now.

Who is behind grena.nu?

The initiative for the national platform originated in SUHF’s working group for open educational resources, which has now concluded. The site is managed and developed by librarians and ICT educators from various higher education institutions across the country and is linked to SUHF’s working group for open science. grena.nu is hosted at Karlstad University.
